Enable, Employ, Engage and Empower: Good practices in disability inclusion in the manufacturing sector
To promote the inclusion of persons with disabilities across industry sectors, especially in manufacturing, the India Business & Disability Network (IBDN) of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) commissioned a study, with the support of GIZ. It presents champion companies in the manufacturing sector that have effectively advanced the inclusion of people with disabilities in the workplace. The study aimed to provide concrete examples and measures that can be replicated by other organisations in the manufacturing sector.
The study highlights significant findings from four champion companies and other industry best practices within four pillar themes: Enable, Employ, Engage and Empower. It is intended to address the common issues that all businesses face vis-a-vis disability inclusion. It highlights best practices that have assisted champion organisations in overcoming various obstacles and determining success factors for increasing disability inclusion in the manufacturing industry.
The inclusion practices of four champion companies were:
- WorthTrust – Leading Social Service Organisation in vocational training and Manufacturer of Commercial Product Packing, Roca Bathroom Product, Engineering Plastic etc.
- Michelin Tyre – Michelin is a French, second largest tyre manufacturerin the world.
- Spark Minda – All major Passenger Vehicle, Commercial Vehicle, Motorcycle & Scooter, Off-road Vehicle & Tier 1 Manufacturers in India and Overseas.
- Radnik Export – Garment export house since the early 1970s; Design and manufacturer casual and formal high fashion specialise in female apparels.
The publication was launched at the CII annual National Conference on Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, with the theme of A & I – The Future of India Inc. Building Accessible and Inclusive Workplace held on 10 May 2022.
The conference brought together business leaders, policymakers, disability experts, and development organisations from across the country to discuss ways to a holistic approach to inclusion at workplaces and build an enabling ecosystem to boost accessibility and inclusion for persons with disabilities.
