Thailand Business and Disability Network launches to mainstream disability inclusion across the private sector
28 April 2026
The Thailand Business and Disability Network (TBDN) held its first member event in Bangkok, on 27 March 2026, bringing together over 50 organisational leaders from 17 organisations to rethink disability inclusion as a core business strategy, rather than standalone programmes.
An estimated 11.3 million people in Thailand — around 16% of the population — live with a disability, yet fewer than 25% are in employment. With 70% of Thailand's national wealth held by people over 50 — an age group with a significantly higher likelihood of disability — accessibility is as much a commercial opportunity as a social responsibility.
The TBDN, established by Bangkok-based social enterprise Steps in partnership with the ILO Global Business and Disability Network, exists to help businesses network inclusion efforts across departments and core business operations.
Central to the session was the concept of "disability confidence" — not as a fixed standard, but as an ongoing commitment. A disability-confident organisation, in TBDN's framework, ensures its environments and processes are barrier-free, adapts practices so individuals can contribute fully, and avoids assumptions about human potential.
Max Simpson, CEO and Founder of Steps, said: "We're here to help companies network inclusion — to take it from one programme or one CSR initiative and make it part of their strategic framework."
The session also addressed the business case. Dr. Namnam Fuwongcharoen, Director of TBDN, emphasised the network's inclusive approach: "Members can move at their own pace. Every organisation is different and has different needs."
Julia Govinden, CEO of United Through Sports and newly appointed Associate Member of TBDN, reflected: "Inclusion must be lived, not just declared. Being part of TBDN allows us to learn from peers who are putting that into action every day."
TBDN's 2026 roadmap includes peer leader roundtables, inclusion framework tools available via a members-only platform, and access to training and advocacy events with leaders in disability confidence from Thailand and globally.
