Beyond the scoreboard: Shaping inclusive futures through sports
One compelling episode, “Beating the Odds,” features Franciele Da Silva, a football champion from Capgemini Brazil. Franciele, the only deaf member of her family, faced barriers in pursuing her passion for football. Initially discouraged by her family, who believed football was unsuitable for her as a woman, Franciele moved out of Brazil at 18 to seek opportunities in soccer and basketball for individuals with hearing disabilities.
Adapting to new environments and team dynamics was challenging for her. Initially the sole deaf player on her school team, she relied on facial expressions and gestures to communicate. Over time, she joined an association for players with hearing disabilities, where she faced the unique challenge of using sign language in a sport where teammates had to learn to recognize and respond to her signs.
Franciele’s journey also involved international travel for championships, including events in Thailand, where she had to navigate diverse cultures and communication barriers. Her experience underscores the importance of inclusive teams that embrace and understand different communication methods. In teams where sign language is recognized and valued, the environment is more supportive, and personal growth is facilitated.
To further enhance inclusivity, Franciele advocates for broader sign language education, both in sports and the workplace. Initiatives like Café con Libras in Brazil are vital in promoting understanding and empathy, making spaces more accessible for individuals with hearing disabilities.
By championing diversity and inclusion, Capgemini and its athletes are setting a powerful example of how sports can unite people from all walks of life and pave the way for a more inclusive future.
