Access to work scheme launch Nigeria
In 2022, the leadership of the Nigeria Business and Disability Network presented its advocacy position paper to the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) at the first National Diversity and Inclusion Conference. One of their demands is the need for the government to incentivise the private sector on disability inclusive employment through the funding of assistive devices or tax rebates. The government committed to this demand and created the National Access to Work framework. The launch proved the shared commitment to operationalizing the discrimination against persons with disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018. Participants reaffirmed the importance of tackling the barriers that persons with disabilities face in securing and maintaining employment, aligning with Sections 28 and 29 of the Act. The access to work scheme aims to level the playing field, fostering workplaces where everyone has the chance to contribute and thrive.
Key outcomes and highlights:
- Providing Assistive Work Tools: enabling persons with disabilities to perform tasks effectively by supplying essential assistive devices and technologies.
- Promoting Shared Responsibility: fostering collaboration with private sector employers.
- Fostering Inclusivity: supporting employers in creating accessible, safe, and inclusive work environments for persons with disabilities.
The access to work scheme addresses these challenges by encouraging more inclusive hiring practices and boosting economic participation for persons with disabilities. The event projected expected outcomes of the scheme, including a 15% reduction in unemployment among persons with disabilities, strengthened economic inclusion, and increased tax revenue and GDP growth.
The launch of the framework is just the beginning. The Nigeria Business and Disability Network aims to continue working with all stakeholders and the government to foster the creation of a more inclusive and equitable workforce for all Nigerians.
