Philippines’ Southstar Drug Welcomes Its 2nd Wave of Disability-Inclusive Hires
In the Philippines, persons with autism and persons with down syndrome are typically seen as dependents of their parents and family members, but local pharmacy chain Southstar Drug is flipping the narrative by showcasing their talents in the workplace.
Building on its pioneering efforts, Southstar Drug, a member of the Philippine Business and Disability Network (PBDN), recently onboarded its 14 new employees with autism and down syndrome as customer service assistants. This event was preceded by a disability sensitivity training of the new hires’ colleagues and managers to ensure they are equipped with the necessary knowledge and perspectives to interact with their colleagues with disabilities.
Since Southstar Drug’s first disability-inclusive hiring initiative in 2016, the company has seen long-term success, with many of the original 24 hires continuing to contribute significantly to its operations through finance and human resources administrative and in-store roles, equipped with full-time employment and equal pay. During the onboarding, the company shared its testimony to the work ethic and valuable contributions of their employees with disability.
For many of these new hires, this opportunity represents more than just a job. It’s a pathway to recognition and dignity. As Zach, one of the new hires, relates: "Job interviews have always been hard for me, but Southstar let me show what I can do. I feel seen and respected here."
Thaddeus Sanchez, Southstar’s General Manager shares, "We remain committed to building a more inclusive workplace, one opportunity at a time."
Southstar Drug’s efforts exemplify how inclusive hiring can challenge biases and build workplaces where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Their commitment to inclusion not only empowers individuals but sets a benchmark for how businesses can lead the way in creating equitable opportunities for all.
