Through the facilitative workshops involving people with disabilities, Zain’s task force conducted an assessment on key focus areas in line with the ILO Global Business and Disability Network (GBDN) Charter, with the objective to help the taskforce understand the scope of internationally recognized disability inclusion standards.

The workshop format provided an opportunity to engage in a model self-assessment that had been aligned with the 10 principles of the GBDN Charter. The task force conducted the test using an internally developed assessment guide which has been designed by the Diversity and Inclusion team. It aims to improve operations, and the understanding of the 10 principles. At the same time, it also aims to identify the key components of disability inclusion that need to be addressed to implement the disability inclusion initiative within Zain effectively. The workshops also offer both taskforce members and participants to engage in peer-to-peer learning and to exchange ideas and experiences.

As a result of the workshops, the employees, task force and the Diversity and Inclusion team have more knowledge and understanding of disability inclusion and its importance for the workplace. Consequently, there is a better understanding of where Zain is currently positioned and a 3-month plan was developed to implement by the end of 2019.

The task force covered issues like communication and awareness, training and development, policies and recruitment, accessibility and assistive Technologies. Through brainstorming, feedback and ideas from employees with disabilities, the team at Zain now has a clear focus for the remainder of 2019.
